How Long Do Different Parts of Your Home Typically Last?

The average age of houses nationwide is roughly 36 years old (2009 U.S. Census). When a house is built, it’s expected to stick around for decades. However, different parts of the house need to be repaired or replaced from time to time for the house to make it that long. From the foundation to the roof, and the mailbox to the fence post, the parts that make up a home have varying lifecycles.

When buying a home, one of the first things people look at is when the home was built. And while that does matter, it’s important to find out when things have been replaced along the way. Knowing how old the different parts are and the average age at which those parts need to be replaced will help you understand the full cost of owning a home, not just buying it.
